Security guard was my first job

I had now got the full respect and acceptance of the team, after the experience that I had at the Conference in the summer. I had been punched, verbally abused and spat at by ‘normal’ people and that had earned my colleague’s respect.

But I was only just beginning in my quest to learn as much about the business of security and guarding. It was as if my experiences had earned me a sort of promotion, as I was being packed off to a series of buildings that were constantly being targeted by travellers and squatters. The company that employed me offered eviction services as one of its main specialities as well as site clearance once a bunch of people had been moved on. Many of these properties could benefit from the installation of steel security screens, which would solve the problem of intruders immediately, without the extra expense needed for security guards.

We have suggested this route on many occasions to this client, but they do not want to listen as they prefer a physical presence on the site.

When I first got inside the place having cleared the remainder of people, I was shocked by the sight that was in front of me. I was once open-minded about the travelling community, thinking that they were proud of their heritage and culture. But the rubbish that was left behind, was truly awful! Not only did it consist of human waste, but also rotten food products, and the detritus from some heavy drug-taking sessions. Naturally we were well equipped to deal with sort of problem, but as another human being, it was a truly stomach-wrenching experience. I had no idea how someone could exist in those conditions – needles littering the ground and signs that animals had been present. If we failed to clear up after these people and made the place safe, the properties would be classed as ‘void properties’ and would not be able to get insurance.
